Whiplash | Bury Chiropractic

It’s a common misconception that whiplash only occurs in road accidents. It might surprise you to know that it can be caused by a variety of other traumas, too. Here are a few examples where a violent jolt to the head can result in whiplash:

  • Being shaken
  • Being punched/fighting
  • Violent roller-coaster rides
  • Boxing
  • Rugby
  • Falls

Whiplash happens when the neck —the cervical spine— is suddenly and violently stretched. This can be via a forward, backward, or sideways movement. The discs that sit between the cervical vertebrae (neck bones), along with the muscles, tendons and ligaments there, can become overstretched or torn. This can cause a variety of symptoms:

  • Neck pain
  • Stiffness
  • Tenderness
  • Numbness
  • Tingling
  • Muscle spasms
  • Irritability
  • Mood swings
  • Memory loss
  • Blurred vision
  • Ringing in the ears

Symptoms don’t always show immediately; you might not notice any discomfort or pain for a few days. If you experience any trauma to the head, it’s advisable to seek medical assistance straight away.

When it comes to whiplash, our goal as chiropractors is to return the neck joints to their normal position, to relieve pain and allow function to be restored. Don’t forget —we’re here to help.
