About Headaches

Headaches are symptoms of pain anywhere in the head or neck.
They can be migraine, tension type, or cluster in nature, and whilst some headaches can be very serious, most are not.

Headaches can affect concentration, energy levels, and activities of daily living.

Headache Causes

There are many causes of headaches, some of which can be eliminated very easily —such as those caused by dehydration. Other causes can include:

01

Tension

02

Fatigue

03

Stress

04

Medication Side-Effects

05

Sinus and Viral Infections

06

Dental Issues

Cervicogenic

Our Approach to Headaches.

Cervicogenic headaches are a type of headache that arise from the neck or cervical spine. They are caused by a structural problem or injury in the neck, such as a herniated disc or arthritis, that triggers pain signals that are referred to the head. Cervicogenic headaches can be distinguished from other types of headaches by their location and symptoms.

Symptoms of cervicogenic headaches include:

1 Pain that is typically located on one side of the head, but may also be felt on both sides

2 Pain that originates in the neck or base of the skull and radiates up to the head

3 Stiffness or restricted range of motion in the neck

4 Pain that is triggered by certain movements of the neck or sustained postures

5 Pain that is often described as throbbing, aching, or dull.

Though a lot of people take medication when they have a headache, Chiropractic adjustments can be very effective in reducing pain and improving the range of motion by providing stretches, rehabilitative exercises, ergonomic advice, and spinal adjustments, all of which help to reduce the frequency and severity of cervicogenic headaches.

First Time Visitors

Relief Care

Our first goal is to relieve your symptoms as quickly as possible. The severity of your condition will determine the length of this phase. Typically, the number of visits in this phase is frequent and can involve multiple visits to the centre each week.

Rehabilitative / strengthen and corrective phase

During this phase of care, the goal is to remove the root cause of your problem and to restore optimal function. This phase of care is also dependent upon the severity of the problem. The frequency of care can still be multiple visits per week, but unlikely to be as frequent as the relief phase of care.

Wellness Care

Once your body has had the chance to heal, we believe it is important to continue with care by having periodic checkups to help prevent future problems and to enable your body to continue to function at its most optimal level. Your lifestyle, health goals, and practitioner’s advice will determine the frequency of care that is right for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

This is dependent upon the cause of your headaches. Headaches can come and go. That is not to say that the problem has gone away when the symptoms have. Headaches should always be investigated, and any untoward causes ruled out. As Chiropractors we have seen and helped thousands of people over the years suffering from cervicogenic headaches (headaches which arise from the neck).
Contrary to popular belief, headaches are not normal! Symptoms of any sort are your body‘s way of communicating to you that there is a problem that needs to be addressed. Headaches should not be ignored.

Yes. We have seen thousands of instances where the cause of the headaches have been neck related. Problems in the neck can refer pain into the head.

Some of the most common types of headaches are:

  1. Sinus headaches, where pain is located in the sinuses;
  2. Cluster headaches, where pain is in or around one eye;
  3. Tension headaches, which can feel like a tight band constricting the head;
  4. Migraines, where pain can affect the vision and cause nausea.
To help prevent headaches that are cervicogenic (arising from the neck) in nature, limit the time you spend on tablets, computers and laptops. Take frequent breaks if sitting for long periods. Drink plenty of water and limit your caffeine and alcohol intake; dehydration headaches are real! Have your posture assessed by a Chiropractor to determine if there are any misalignments in your body that can result in headaches which can be rectified.
