We spend around a third of our lives in bed so it’s crucial that we don’t end up damaging our health in the process. Something as simple as having the right pillow can go a long way. The right type of support can help the spine rest in as natural a position as possible so sleep can do its job; sleep is the body’s chance to rest and repair itself.

Our necks curve slightly forward so that the spine can comfortably take the weight of the head when upright. But it’s important to try to maintain this curve when we’re sleeping, or in any resting position. Good posture is everything!   

When lying on your back, your pillow should support the natural curvature of the cervical spine, making sure there is enough support under your head, neck, and shoulders, too. If you sleep on your back, use a thinner pillow than you would if you were sleeping on your side.


When you’re on your side, your spine should still maintain a straight horizontal line. The right pillow should help you with this. Use a thicker pillow than you would if you were sleeping on your back, to help maintain the natural line of your spine.

Which pillow should I get?

We would recommend a shaped pillow, which is fuller at one edge, and makes sure that the nape of your neck is supported. The lower end of the pillow supports the head.

Don’t Lie on your Front!

Sleeping on your front is the most stressful position for your body. It also means you are lying on your lungs, so with every breath, you must lift the weight of your body away from the mattress. No wonder you wake up tired!

If you can’t avoid front-sleeping, make sure your pillow is relatively flat, or that your head rests directly on the mattress, to take some strain away from your head and neck. You can also place another thin pillow under your stomach and hips to help keep the lower back in its natural alignment.
